more failure please

I know I'll be famous someday because I keep failing at things. It seems like anyone who is famous has great stories about how they failed so much at first, they were broke, or starving, couldn't walk, etc. Then somehow they became the best at what they do, were really famous and we all admire them. I didn't get into the illustration program the first 2 times I applied. I had one professor tell me my style was getting me no where and I should try cubism. I don't know if that list is long enough though. I could include my freshman GPA, many dating experiences, my attempts at being an opera singer, etc. etc. but I don't know if that stuff relates to my failures as an artist. I think I need to find some more ways to fail really big in art and recieve major rejection so I can hurry up and become famous.

Becca, when you´re famous, I will be so excited to tell everyone that you were once my visiting teaching companion. How fabulous.

ok, you dont' know me but...
Wow! I've totally been feeling the same way! So we're both gonna be famous! But seriously, I think the reason people who "make it big" tend to come from rock bottom, is that it motivates them to try harder than anyone else is willing to try. Plus, when you're at rock bottom, and you realize that the limits of your failure seem boundless, then you start to think that maybe so are the limits to your success.
So, two stories:
#1....My little sister's voice teacher is a really GREAT singer, and HER voice teacher at BYU told her that she was going to embarrass the school.... and she didn't, but she was afraid of singing for years! But now she is a really great teacher, partly because she is so positive and encouraging to her students, besides having a beautiful voice....
#2....When the beach boys wrote "surfin usa", it was for a high school music project and it got an F. Now you may not like the beach boys, but they still made (and probably MAKE) major bucks on that song, and MORE like it, whether their music teacher liked it or not. (or anybody else for that matter)
SO.... anyway, as an artist, sometimes people tell you terrible things I think just to challenge you and your passion. If you like your illustration style - keep with it. If you think it needs work or experimentation, then experiment. But if you really love what you're doing and believe in it, it shows. So, you're totally right: Bring it on!

A good artist is never accepted to begin with unfortunately. Your art is awesome, and you will find a way to make it work. Don't stop.

Also, I didn't know you sang?!

I don't actually.
that was the problem.

that can't be true.... I find it hard to believe that someone who DOESN'T sing, would even THINK about opera

no, it really is true. I just enjoy singing, but I'm horrible about being on key, several people and good friends have informed me of this. I think it's so cool how opera singers can just have so much power, sometimes it's like they're just screaming and I thought it would be fun. But I failed....so far.
